Like the artists of pre-photographic times, I always travel with a sketch book. Those drawings are a record of my travels and may go on to become exhibited works. For example, drawings I made to record my travels to Gujarat (2013) and Norway (2014) were subsequently shown at Articulate Gallery under the title Soundlines (2014).

My recent drawings were made during an Indonesian Art Tour to the islands of Bali and Java, organised by 16 Albermarle Project Space. The Goddess mountain drawings were inspired by the rice Goddess Shridevi and the rice paddies on the foothills of Mt. Batukaru, in central Bali. Tofu shelter and mosque Melati were created on a two-day bus trip from Jakarta, via Bandung, Solo to Jogjakarta. On the way we visited Melati Suryodarmo, the renowned performance artist, in her studio situated in a village close to Solo. The Buddhist temple group began as blind contour drawings of Borobudur temple. A record of our last day in Java, they were completed in my Marrickville studio.
Exhibiting at Articulate Project Space in the group exhibition DRAW, 29 July - 13 August 2023
