Tebajima Art Festival, 2025, Tokushima, Japan

During the Tebajima Art Festival, with the assistance of an interpreter, I offered Book Binding and Story Telling workshops based on the deign of the Edo samurai manuscripts from the Awa Province (now Tokushima). Participants told moving sea voyage stories about: lost dreams in Korea and Brazil; departures on ships with coloured streamers; long journeys on tuna fishing boats to far away lands.

Book Binding
Materials – woollen thread and paper
Edo period manuscripts, written and illustrated by samurai officials, describe in detail the samurai’s encounter with the pirates. Those accounts exist today in their original book form, which I have copied for these books. Makita Hamaguchi, a local samurai, wrote the first account of the episode and illustrated it using ink and watercolour. Among the illustrations is a painting of a red woollen jacket worn by one of the pirates. It inspired me to bind these books with red wool from Australia.

Seafaring Story Telling
In the book you can write and draw a story about a sea voyage. Consider creating the story with your friends and family while listening to someone telling a story.

Inspiration for writing and drawing.

1. Remember or imagine a sea voyage you have been on, in a ferry, a cruise ship, a sailing boat...
2. Is your sea journey set in the past or the future?
3. Draw a map of your voyage.
4. What are the shape and the materials your boat is made from?
5. What is under the sea as you travel along?
6. Is the boat a rowing, sailing or motor boat?
7. Listen to someone telling you a story about the sea voyage, either real or imagined.
8. Write and draw while you listen, read a book or watch a film about sea voyage.
9. Do you know someone who has worked and travelled on boats?
10. Ask a fisherman, a scuba diver, a sailor, a sea captain, a surfer, a scientist if they have sea voyage story to share with you?

本づくり（製本）
素材： ウール糸と紙
江戸時代の写本には、侍たちが海賊と遭遇した様子が詳細に記録され、文章と挿絵で綴られています。これらの記録は現在も当時の写本の形で残されており、その写しを今回の本づくりに使用しました。
地元の侍である浜口巻太は、この出来事の最初の記録を書き、墨と水彩で挿絵を描きました。その中には、海賊の一人が着ていた赤いウールの上着の絵も含まれています。この上着に着想を得て、オーストラリア産の赤いウール糸で本を綴じました。
海の物語づくり
この本には、あなた自身の海の旅の物語を描いたり書いたりすることができます。誰かが語る物語を聞きながら、友人や家族と一緒に物語を作ってみてください。
物語を書く・描くためのアイデア

1. 実際に経験した、または想像上の海の旅を思い出してみましょう。（フェリー、クルーズ船、帆船など）

3. 旅の地図を描いてみましょう。
4. あなたの船の形や素材はどのようなものですか？

7. 誰かに実際の海の旅、または想像上の旅の話を聞いてみましょう。
8. その話を聞きながら、または海の旅に関する本を読んだり映画を観たりしながら、書いたり描いたりしてみましょう。
9. 船で働いたり旅をしたことがある人を知っていますか？
10. 漁師、スキューバダイバー、船乗り、船長、サーファー、科学者など、海の旅の経験がある人に話を聞いてみましょう。
