Drawing On Rock
Public Artwork
Drawing on Rock is a permanent marble sculpture located on the banks of the Hoang River in Hue, Vietnam. It comprises two large marble stones with patterns etched into their surface. On one rock the patterns are based on a longevity symbol found in the historic Pagoda of the Celestial Lady in Hue. The patterns on the second stone depict the molecular structure of marble in magnified form.
The carvers who assisted me and the other participating artists to make our works over a seven-week period came from a stone carvers’ village in north Vietnam. The work was part of the Second International Sculpture Symposium in Hue, Vietnam.
